There are many interesting podcasts out there, but they are scattered all over the Internet. You may have to browse through several websites if you wish to follow more than one podcast. gPodder makes everything much easier. This lightweight application gives you the possibility of downloading and playing your favorite podcasts on a single user interface, from the comfort of your Mac's desktop. You can also use it on Windows, Linux and other operating systems and on various mobile phones as well.

gPodder's user interface displays your imported podcasts in a column, on its left side, as well as their latest episodes, in the larger area on the right. Double clicking an episode will display the available information, for that episode, in the same area. Importing a new podcast can be done by simply pasting its URL on a small window or by loading an OPML file. What's more, gPodder comes with a default list of podcasts, to help you get started. You can play a podcast's episodes with your default media player.

The application is capable of checking for new episodes automatically, on a regular basis, but it can also check on demand. All you have to do is click a button, beneath the podcasts list and the application will display the new episodes, for all podcasts, on a separate window, on which you can select them and hit a Download option. Active downloads and their progress are displayed on the main interface, on a separate tab. By default, gPodder will download the targeted episodes one by one, but you can increase the limit of simultaneous downloads through a counter, in the lower right corner of the window. Setting up a different download rate is another possibility.

gPodder's preferences menu contains other useful options. You can change the update interval if you want to, which can be anywhere between 10 minutes and 12 hours. Also, the application can be set to delete old episodes automatically, on a regular interval. Additionally, you can set it to delete them even if they are unplayed or unfinished. Furthermore, gPodder is capable of sending your podcasts to external devices, which you may configure in the same preferences menu.

Pros

You can download and manage podcasts on your Mac. gPodder can check for new episodes and update podcasts automatically. Also, it can send your podcasts directly to an iPod or other external devices.

Cons

A built-in player would make the application more comfortable. When it comes to following podcasts on the Internet, gPodder can relieve you from searching through countless web pages for new episodes.
